The name Jolie-Laide translates loosely to Pretty-Ugly, a French term of endearment to describe something that is unconventionally beautiful. The winery was founded by Scott Schultz, who was joined later by his partner, Jenny Schultz in Sebastopol, California. All of their wines are made by fermenting the grapes whole cluster, stomping them by foot and then fermenting in neutral oak. The Schultzs work with grape growers who work with organic methods and they have an affection for making single vineyard bottlings. Scott has also worked for other boutique names like Arnot-Roberts, Pax Mahle and Wind Gap before founding Jolie-Laide in 2010.
‘Ses Ailes Noires’ is made from very rare vines that are almost extinct. This wine sees a touch of skin contact. Floral and savory with notes of melon, yellow stone fruit, white tea and a stoney minerality.
